Foot pump

A car foot pump is a mechanical device allowing you to inflate your car’s tyres, thus normalizing their air pressure. In most cases, devices of this type are easier to use than hand ones, as they put less strain to the user’s muscles during operation.

Operating principle

Tyres are inflated when one presses the pedal with a foot. During this, a cylinder, connected to the pedal via a pivot, moves with respect to the piston. This movement compresses the air inside the cylinder. The air then goes through a hose into the tyre.

What are the types of car foot pumps?

The most popular are designs with cylinder-shaped containers; they can be:

• Single-barrel. As a rule, they have a relatively low price. Moreover, their operation requires no significant effort. They are suitable for owners of small and mid-size cars.
• Double-barrel. High performance is their advantage. Tyres can be inflated quite fast but it takes much effort. They are optimal for servicing large vehicles with big wheels.

These accessories also differ by air hose length. This value can be, for instance, 60 or 55 cm.

Car foot pumps: usage notes

1. Study the manual supplied by the manufacturer before using the device. Usually, the process is rather simple: you need to press the pedal with a certain frequency.
2. Observe the readings of the built-in pressure gauge in order to control pressure in the tyre. It should correspond to car manufacturer’s requirements.
3. After you finish, check the tyre pressure using a portable pressure gauge.
4. Note that a mechanical device might still be useful even if you have an electric compressor. It won’t take much space in the luggage compartment but will come in handy if the cigarette lighter is faulty or there are malfunctions in the car’s electric system.
