Fiat Punto Mk2 shock absorber dust cover and bump stops

Replacing dust boots and bump stops of shock absorbers on the FIAT PUNTO (188) vehicle will require dismantling of struts, so contact a service station.

Dust caps and bump stops of shock absorbers should be replaced in pairs, and their replacement is usually combined with installation of new shock absorbers. Even if at first glance it seems that the components are suitable for further use, it is better to replace them: most likely, the service life of the components has expired, and faults will occur in the near future.

To remove the spring when disassembling the shock strut of the FIAT PUNTO (188) vehicle, you will need a special remover. Never compress springs with improvised tools, like ropes or old seatbelts, as in case of accidental release of the spring, there is high risk of injury.

For unscrewing the nut of the shock absorber, a socket and a wrench are usually used. Be careful not to damage the surface of the rod. Final tightening of the fastener is made with a torque wrench.

It is important that the bump stop be put tight enough on the rod, otherwise dirt and moisture that ingress under it may cause accelerated wear of the unit.

Before installing new components, it is important to clean dirt from the rod of the shock absorber. Otherwise, reliable protection of the rod will not be ensured.

Check and if necessary align wheels of the FIAT PUNTO (188) vehicle: during the operations they may get misaligned.
