What are the types of torches

By power supply type:

• With disposable batteries. Such accessories don’t need charging, so they are irreplaceable when travelling away from power supply lines.
• With a rechargeable battery. There are models which can be charged via a 220V electric mains, 12V car electric cigarette lighter, or USB port. The advantage of such devices is that they don’t need a regular replacement of power sources.

By housing material:

• metal (reliable, corrosion- and impact-resistant).

By light source type:

• LED. These are power-efficient devices with a long service life. They produce a powerful light output. In catalogues, one can find models with a different number of light-emitting diodes: most often there are from 1 to 5, but there are also devices with a larger number.
• With filament lamps. Such devices are inexpensive but have a low light output, short service life and heat up heavily.
• Halogen. They have a bigger light output than filament lamps, but they also heat up much.
• Gas discharge. They include metal-halide and xenon lamps. These are very powerful devices with a long service life. Their disadvantages are a high price, delay of up to 2-3 seconds when turning on and significant heating.

By design features:

• Pocket-sized torches. They are compact devices which are very popular among car enthusiasts.
• Full-size hand torches. They are rather large but powerful at the same time. Some devices are equipped with a handle for easy hanging.
• Head torches. They are fastened to a person’s head with an elastic strap. There are models with a power source in a separate case which is fastened to the user’s belt. Such design allows using powerful light sources without overloading the spine at the same time.

Features of torch usage

1. Devices should be used in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction. Before using the torch make sure that all its elements are well tightened.
2. To avoid overheating of the device, try not to use it in the maximum mode for long.
3. The devices should be stored in a clean dry place with low humidity, protected from direct sunlight. It is very important to prevent moisture from getting onto batteries and inner parts of the torch.
4. It is recommended to keep a spare kit of batteries if the accessory uses disposable power sources.
