These are the outer CV joint plus boot. These wear, and it is cheaper to replace them early than late, as if one only replaces them when they click, one also needs to replace wheel bearings, and due to worn wheel bearings, one may need to replace every other suspension part including wishbones, antiroll bar and shocks.
